A dilated fundus exam may or may not be part of the routine eye exam where dilating drops are used to enlarge pupillary openings to obtain a more thorough view of the retina (back lining of the eye that controls the functioning of the eye). The effects of the drops are light sensitivity and inability to focus at near for about 2-3 hours thereafter. The use of the drops would be at the discretion of the doctor after evaluating your individual situation. We recommend that you bring dark sunglasses for your drive home or bring a driver if needed.
